Gosforth full house refurbishment

Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne

A whole house taken on, kitchen to carport. Twin marble islands on herringbone oak, curved shelving that follows the wall rather than fighting it, a glazed extension pushed out into the garden, bathrooms, dressing rooms and fitted joinery throughout. One team, one house, start to finish.

The curved shelving runs were built to follow the wall, not to sit flat against it.

Bathrooms across several properties, each one taken from strip out to finish. A classic room in bevelled metro with a roll top bath under plantation shutters. A dated bathroom pulled out entirely and returned as ribbed grey tile with a lit niche. Wet rooms in stone effect porcelain, and marble effect shower rooms with oak wall hung vanities and matt black brassware.

The grey bathroom was taken back to bare walls and pipework before a single tile went on.

Barn conversion

Northumberland barn conversion

Northumberland

These barns were derelict. Corrugated roofs failing, cart entrances open to the Northumberland weather, salvaged stone stacked in the yard. The stone walls were kept and repointed, a new timber roof structure went on over the top, and the insides were lined in birch ply against limewashed stone with polished concrete underfoot. Where there was a yard, there is now a courtyard.

The original rough timber rafters were retained and left exposed above the limewashed stone.

Basement conversion and refurbishment

Jesmond basement conversion

Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne

A Victorian cellar stripped back to its original stone and repointed by hand. What was found stayed: a cast iron wall safe still lined in gilt, a carved stone lion mask now set in the centre bay of the wine cellar. What was added had to earn its place, hand built brick wine bins, reclaimed brick archways and a cantilevered stone staircase with treads that appear to float out of the wall. The client called it quirky and cool. It is the most characterful room Kay Homes has built.

Two bedrooms taken back and rebuilt around joinery. Recessed feature ceilings with concealed lighting, dado panelling, televisions set flush into panelled walls, floors sanded and varnished, and made to measure wardrobes with a lit dressing nook built into the run.

The Vampire Rabbit cocktail bar

Newcastle upon Tyne

A Newcastle cocktail bar that commits. There is a Peacock Room in deep embossed green, a vault snug lined wall to wall in buttoned tan leather, leopard runners on the stairs and a mirrorball in the pink lounge. Structural work first, then the marble, the brass and the gilt. Restraint was not the brief.

Loft conversion and kitchen extension

Two jobs in one house. Dead loft space became a vaulted bedroom and a stone tiled ensuite with a bath under the rooflight, while downstairs a new extension opened the back of the house up to a deep green shaker kitchen under a roof lantern.

The old bar came out and a new one went in: a heavily veined marble counter over an illuminated textured front, with the spirits tiered inside an enormous carved gilt frame. Built to be the first thing you look at when you walk in.

An open plan kitchen and living extension built around a two tier island, with taupe slab cabinetry, brass bar pulls and a flush induction hob. A black framed atrium skylight drops light onto the basket weave floor and the bi-folds fold the garden into the room.
