Jesmond basement conversion
A Victorian cellar stripped back to its original stone and repointed by hand. What was found stayed: a cast iron wall safe still lined in gilt, a carved stone lion mask now set in the centre bay of the wine cellar. What was added had to earn its place, hand built brick wine bins, reclaimed brick archways and a cantilevered stone staircase with treads that appear to float out of the wall. The client called it quirky and cool. It is the most characterful room Kay Homes has built.
